Cultural note: SUNBELT Gli Stati americani meridionali e sudoccidentali, dalla Carolina del Nord alla California, costituiscono la Sunbelt, così chiamata per il suo clima mite e soleggiato. Al nome si associa anche un rinnovato sviluppo economico, con aumento di popolazione e di potere politico. Gli stati settentrionali e nordoccidentali appartengono invece alla "Frostbelt", così chiamata per via dei lunghi inverni freddi, o "Rustbelt", per la presenza un tempo di stabilimenti industriali, ora perlopiù in declino.
